Fisheries science is the academic discipline of managing and understanding fisheries.

India is the 2nd largest fish producing country in the world. Around 15 million people are engaged in fisheries and its allied activities. 

Andhra Pradesh is the largest fish producer state in the country followed by West Bengal and Gujarat. 

The total fish production during the financial year 2024-25 is estimated to be 195 lakh tonnes. 

Fish and fish products have presently emerged as the largest group in agriculture exports from India with 16,98,170 tonnes in terms of quantity and 62,408.45 crores in value.

The salary in the private sector may start from Rs 2.5 – 3 Lakh/Year. Salary offered in the government sector is different from the private sector.

Depending on education and experience, fisheries professionals can get an average pay of Rs 3 – 5 Lakh/Year.

The government sectors offer a pay which is less compared to the private sector, but is stable.

Depending upon the position and profile the salaries vary. The starting salary for a Fisheries graduate will range from Rs. 8,000-10,000 per month.

A Fisheries scientist might get a pay of Rs 15600-39100 per month.

Salaries in private sector-

One can start with a salary of Rs 6,000-8,000 in the private sector.

Job opportunities are plenty in the US, UK, Austria, China and Japan etc. Starting salary can range from Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 65,000 per month for freshers who take up a job in the fisheries department abroad.
